Champix (Varenicline) is an anti-smoking medication that reduces the cravings for nicotine. It is used to help you to stop smoking and reduce uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms.

What is Champix?

Champix is a medication that can help you stop smoking by reducing withdrawal symptoms and stopping cravings.

How does it work?

The medicine will reduce the cravings for nicotine and aids with the withdrawal symptoms you feel when you stop smoking. Champix attaches itself to the receptors that the nicotine in the brain usually attaches to and releases dopamine from.

Is Champix right for me?

If you wish to stop smoking, Champix will help you to bypass the withdrawal symptoms which may include: the urge to smoke again, feeling depressed or irritable and difficulty sleeping.

Dosage

Commonly Used Dosage Guidelines for Champix

For 0.5mg strength

  • Start 1 to 2 weeks before target stop date, initially take one 0.5mg once daily for 3 days, increased to one 0.5mg tablet twice daily for 4 days. Then one 1mg twice daily for 11 weeks (reduce to one 0.5mg twice daily if not tolerated): 12 week. Repeatable.

For 1mg strength

  • 1mg strength tablets to be taken to continue a course of treatment after the dose has been built up using a starter pack in the first two weeks of a course, take one tablet twice daily. Continue course for 12 weeks; 12 week course. Repeatable.
