Triamcinolone acetonide, along with other inactive ingredients like lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide, is the active ingredient in Azmacort inhalation powders.

A prescription drug called azmacort is used to both treat and prevent asthma symptoms. It is an inhaled corticosteroid with a long half-life that works by lowering lung inflammation. Azmacort is typically taken along with bronchodilators and other asthma medications.

Pharmacokinetics

Azmacort is a long-acting corticosteroid that is inhaled. It enters the bloodstream and is quickly broken down by the liver. Within an hour of inhalation, the peak plasma concentration is reached. The half-life of azmacort is two hours.

Indications

For the treatment and prevention of asthma symptoms in adults and children 6 years of age and older, azmacort is recommended.

Side Effects

Azmacort's most frequent adverse reactions are headache, throat irritation, and coughing. Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are some additional potential side effects. Azmacort may make pneumonia more likely to occur.

Monitoring

In those who have liver disease or impaired liver function, azmacort should be used with caution. Blood tests should be used to closely monitor liver function while taking this medication. Azmacort may also make osteoporosis more likely to occur. People taking this medication need to have their bone density checked.

Dosage and Administration

Overdose

Call a poison control center as soon as you notice any serious overdose symptoms, such as fainting or trouble breathing. Overdose symptoms could include:

  • hypertension
  • nervousness
  • Tremor attacks
