Asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are breathing conditions that primarily affect the lungs and can cause a range of breathing difficulties. Asthma often occurs after exposure to a trigger, however, it can happen randomly. Triggers may include common allergies to pollen or animal dander, infections, environmental changes or from exercise.
Alvesco is an aerosol spray that reduces the inflammation of the lungs and the associated airways and thus makes your breathing easier. This is a preventer medication used to treat persistent asthma and should be taken every day.
However, it is not a rescue inhaler and must be used regularly to protect against severe asthma attacks.
What is an Alvesco Inhaler and how does it work?
Alvesco inhaler has ciclesonide as the active ingredient. The active ingredient is a corticosteroid available in the form of inhalation aerosol. It can be used alone or in combination with other drugs. The active ingredient is a corticosteroid, a well-known group of compounds used for their anti-inflammatory properties.
Is an Alvesco Inhaler right for me?
If you are diagnosed with asthma, COPD or other breathing condition, you may be prescribed an Alvesco Inhaler by a doctor or healthcare professional. However, it may not be suitable for you if you have the following:

- If you have ever been treated, or are currently being treated, for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), fungal, viral or bacterial infections.
Side Effects
All medications can cause potential side effects, below we have listed some potential side effects of an Alvesco Inhaler. However, these do not always occur and are mostly mild in nature. But if you experience any prolonged or worrying side effects of an Alvesco Inhaler, please discontinue the medication immediately and consult your doctor.
Uncommon side effects include:
- Headache
- Oral thrush
- Bad taste
- Dryness of mouth or throat
- Nausea or vomiting
- Hoarse voice
- Irritation, burning or inflammation of the mouth or throat
How to use an Alvesco Inhaler?
Always use an Alvesco Inhaler exactly as prescribed by your doctor or advised by the pharmacist. The recommended starting dose for adults is 160 micrograms once daily, however, in presence of other factors, this may be increased or decreased accordingly as per the prescriber's clinical judgement.
For adults:
- For asthma - 160 micrograms once daily
