What is Doxycycline (Malaria Treatment)?

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic, it is used to treat a range of bacterial infections such as chest infections, skin infections and STIs. It is classed as a broad-spectrum antibiotic. 

It can be used to prevent 4 different types of malaria parasites. It works by significantly reducing the spread of the infection allowing the body's defences to destroy the parasite before it takes hold.

What is Doxycycline?

Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic that can be used to treat sexually transmitted diseases (STIs), respiratory infections and it is also an effective malaria preventative.

How does it work?

The doxycycline medication is taken to prevent malaria infection. Malaria parasite (Plasmodium) is carried in a mosquito bite. Doxycycline ensures that any malarial parasite that enters the bloodstream is killed before it can multiply and do harm to the body.

Is Doxycycline right for me?

If you're travelling to a high-risk malaria area, you should consult with your doctor about taking malaria prevention medication. Malaria prevention and treatment vary according to the geographical location. 

Doxycycline should not be taken if the following applies to you:

  • Allergic to doxycyline or any other tetracyclines
  • Are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • Have liver or kidney problems
  • Taking certain medications such as blood thinners

Side Effects

  • Upset stomach
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Sore tongue
  • Inflammation of the liver or bowel

Dosage

Commonly Used Dosage Guidelines for Doxycycline for Malaria

If taking doxycycline for each day of your trip

  • Take one 100mg capsule daily starting 1 to 2 days before entering the malaria zone, whilst there and continue to take for 4 weeks after leaving.
