Mechanism of Action
Monacolins, which are found in red yeast rice, are substances that share structural similarities with the cholesterol-lowering medication lovastatin (Mevacor). Monacolins prevent the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase from producing cholesterol in the liver.
Dosage and Preparation
Red yeast rice is offered as tablets, capsules, and powder. Some Chinese cooking wines also contain it. Red yeast rice does not have a standard dosage, so it's crucial to follow the instructions on the product you're using. Rice with red yeast should be consumed with food.
Overdosages
Red yeast rice overdoses are not known to exist.
